When people think of vegan snacks they think of an apple, carrot sticks or a banana, but there are loads of really simple, tasty, snacks that kids can make for themselves that are more interesting than just a sandwich. With a little help anyone from 2 years up can make these, these are, mostly, healthy, and a lot of fun.
Apple And Peanut Butter
With so many different varieties of apple to choose from you can make this really sweet or quite tart. Cripps apples are great for this snack as they are crispy, but sweet at the same time. For younger children a gala or golden delicious apple might be better. Older kids can slice their own apple, younger children can have their apple cut for them into rings or sticks. For the nut butter you can choose your favourite, it doesn't have to be peanut butter as almond butter, hazelnut butter, or any other nut butter would be great. If you have a nut allergy you can use an alternative spread, such as a nut free chocolate spread.
Nachos
So easy and so tasty. A bag of tortilla crisps, a jar of salsa and some grated cheese on top. You can pop these under the grill for a few minutes to melt the cheese or use a microwave for around 30 seconds, or eat them as they are.
Hummus with Pitta Bread
Hummus with pitta bread is a definite favourite, especially with toasted pitta bread. Some cherry tomatoes and a premade salad turn this in a healthy and filling snack, perfect for after school.
Fruity Pizzas
These are amazing. Using rice cakes as the pizza base and jam as the tomato sauce, you add whatever fruit you want to. Small fruits like raspberries and blueberries can go straight on top. Larger fruits, such as bananas or strawberries, will need to be sliced first. The jam makes the fruit stick so that nothing falls off. You can use the jam of your choice, it doesn't have to be strawberry, raspberry jam or even blackcurrant jam work too. In the photo we used strawberry jam with sliced banana, blueberries and some mango.
These snacks are also great for kids to make in a group, they'll be busy for ages making different pictures and faces on their pizzas. You can make a salad bar by getting a selection salad ingredients so that they can add what they want. It a great way to introduce kids to cooking while getting the fed at the same time.
